Designer Spotlight-Vince Camuto

Watching the leaves fall from the trees today in KL put me in the fall mood.  Boy, do I wish the weather would get into the fall mood!  As I’ve mentioned before, KL is hot and humid all year round with no chance of cooler weather or a change in seasons.  The closest we get to the change of seasons is the rainy season and the non-rainy season, which I still have yet to distinguish.  So being in the fall mood, I put on my fur vest and played dress-up a bit today for my PLAY style.  I know I probably won’t get much use out of this vest living in KL, but hopefully someday soon…especially with fur vests being one of the hottest fashion trends this fall!  This particular faux fur vest I’m wearing is a Vince Camuto and I’m featuring it in today’s Designer Spotlight.

When reading more about Vince Camuto I had no idea that he co-founded the Nine West Group Inc. in 1978, and served as their creative director.  So for over thirty years, Vince Camuto has been providing women with luxurious and affordable footwear.  In 2001, the Camuto Group was established, which provides design, sourcing, marketing and production services to over 5,400 retailers in the world!  Some other facts that surprised me were the fact that he partnered with Tory Burch to launch her footwear collection and actually collaborated with her to create her famous “Reva” ballet flat.  Currently, he’s busy working with Jessica Simpson on her collection, after purchasing the master license for Jessica Simpson in 2005.  But not only is Vince Camuto famous for his footwear and services, his brand includes handbags, jewelry and accessories, a new fragrance and of course clothing…which includes my fur vest.  I believe when wearing a fur vest, you should look chic and classy, but also casual and simple.  This means keeping your accessories to a minimum and your ensemble very simple.  So here I’m wearing jeans and a simple shirt, but this fur vest would also look super cute added to a mid-length dress with high boots or ankle booties.  Remember that fur vests can keep you warm and also look a bit bulky, so wear thin layers to maintain a nice silhouette.  So if you are looking to add a piece to your fall wardrobe, check out some of my favorite fur vests below.

Char Kway Teow please

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, my husband and I visited Penang Island this past weekend.  When planning our trip, many people had mentioned to us that we must try the Char Kway Teow in Penang, as this is a famous dish in this part of Malaysia.  Some even say that Penang dishes out the best Char Kway Teow in Asia!  So what is this dish?  Well, it’s a mixture of things…  First, Char Kway Teow means “stir-fried ricecake strips”…but to be honest, it just looks like fettuccine noodles in a brown sauce to me.  It is made from flat rice noodles and stir-fried over very high heat with egg, soy sauce, chili, a bit of belachan (shrimp paste), prawns (shrimp), deshelled cockles (small clams), bean sprouts and some chopped Chinese chives.  Typically Char Kway Teow is prepared at hawker (vendor) stalls along the streets and this is just where we enjoyed our Char Kway Teow this weekend.

Of course when we discovered that the best Malaysian Char Kway Teow was in Penang, we decided to find the best place in Penang to try it.  So, after a bit of research, we came across a famous hawker stall located not far from our hotel named Kafe Heng Huat.  Here you will find Madam Soon, who has been cooking up this famous dish for over 40 years.  (They say the secret is in the charcoal, as other vendors use a gas stove under their woks.)  Easily recognized by her goggles and famous red beret, Madam Soon was spotted right away when we walked up to her stall.  Unfortunately, she didn’t don the goggles that day, but the red beret was furiously flopping about as she swung her arms rapidly around the steamy wok.  When we walked into the cafe, there was no one to greet us, no friendly hellos.  We weren’t sure if we were supposed to order or just try and grab an available seat, so we opted for the latter before it was too late.  Boy, were we glad we did, because within minutes the place was swarming with people with not an empty seat in the house.  After placing our order with Madam Soon’s assistant, we waited patiently for our food to arrive.  While reading reviews online, we thought we were in store for a good 30-45 minute wait, since each dish is prepared in this single wok.  Luckily, we arrived before the rush and didn’t wait for more than 15 minutes.  Boy, was it yummy!

Of all the foods that I have experienced in Malaysia, this is one dish I will miss the most.  I foresee myself back in the States someday sitting at a table, day-dreaming of Malaysia and thinking, “Boy, I really wish I had some fried Char Kway Teow.”  Ha!

Peek-a-BLUE

This past weekend we visited Penang Island, an island four hours north of Kuala Lumpur (more on Penang in a later Travel Thursdays post).  The weather wasn’t as nice as we would have liked, but we made the most of the two days by visiting all of the sites that Penang Island has to offer.  On the first day, we walked along the water on our way to the first stop – a blue-colored, historical mansion.  I really loved the backdrop in these pictures with my bright-colored, green skirt and plaid, checked top.  I also really love how fashion and style can be so colorful when combining unusual pieces together…just like taking my plaid, checked top and adding it to my a-line, flared mini and animal print flats to make a fun DAY style outfit during our afternoon in Penang.
