Spotted-Classic Pumps

The classic pair of pumps or high heels not only will make you appear taller, but also a bit leaner.  As stated in this post, whether you fancy sky-high stilettos or coy kitten heels, classic pumps are a must in any closet!  My go-to pumps for work, day and play are black and nude-colored and usually between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 inches in heel height, which are considered a “mid-heel”.  Anything over 3 1/2 inches I usually reserve for my PLAY style and wear for shorter periods of time on the weekends or after work, especially recommended if you have a conservative office.  When buying a pair of classic pumps, make sure you measure your foot first to ensure you are buying the correct size.  A secret is to shop for shoes after you have done a bit of walking so your foot is swollen a bit and you can determine what size will fit best in your pump.  Walk around in the shoes in the shop and take your time to ensure this shoe is good quality, comfortable and you will get good wear out of it.  Another secret is that I always have a pair of Dr. Scholls high heel inserts…they are so comfy and help during a long day at work.  No matter the pain, I sadly seem to choose style over comfort on almost every occassion…hey, no pain, no gain!  Leading me to number 20 of My One Hundred

Travel-Bali, Uluwatu Temple

A few weeks ago, my husband and I had the opportunity to travel to Bali, Indonesia.  Growing up watching “South Pacific” and listening to my mom sing “Bali Hai” throughout the house, I couldn’t help but play the song on repeat in my head during our visit.  Bali, Indonesia, however, has nothing to do with the South Pacific movie…the only similarity is that it’s an island…and a beautiful one at that.  When visiting Bali, a must-see on your list is the Uluwatu Temple, a Hindu temple renowned for its magnificent location on the top of a steep cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean.

As we approached the temple, I was surprised by all its guardians – tons of little monkeys…

They were having a grand time hanging all over this car and just laying around eating while people admired the temple.

But make sure you hold on to your personal items…they like colorful and shiny objects.  This purse was snatched right out of a young girl’s hand next to us.  It didn’t stand a chance!

Oh and of course, I brought the Loubous…

That’s a sarong around my waist; they must be worn at the temples to cover your body if wearing shorts or a skirt.

As the clouds began rolling in, we said goodbye to the temple but not before snapping this last picture.  It perfectly captures the atmosphere at Uluwatu with the monkey guarding his temple.

Designer Spotlight-CHANEL

Yes, it’s HERE, my Designer Spotlight post for none other than…CHANEL.  I’m really excited!  When I think of pure, classic style, I think of CHANEL.  Established in the early 1900s by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, the CHANEL French fashion house specializes in luxury goods to include perfume (ahem…No. 5!), cosmetics, jewelry, shoes, clothing and of course, handbags.  Coco Chanel is credited for the creation of jersey dresses which flattered the figure, her design of the “little black dress” and the successful “Chanel suit” composed of a knee-length skirt, boxy jacket and traditionally worn with a pearl necklace.  Her items were meant to allow for comfort while conveying casual elegance.  Also most famously known for her handbags, the quilted fabric and leather (which has a secret quilting pattern sewn at the back to keep the material strong) decorated with interlocking C’s stands out as a Chanel trademark.  The most famous of the Chanel handbags is the Chanel 2.55, named after its date of creation – February 1955.  Each detail of the bag has been carefully thought out, as everything down to the color of the lining inside the handbag, has a meaning.  Coco Chanel wanted a purse, first and foremost, that could free the hands of the modern woman while attending social functions…which brought about the double-chain shoulder strap attached by leather-threaded chain inserted through eyelets.  This design was inspired by the keys which hung from the same type of chains that her caretakers carried while growing up at the convent.  The back pocket of the handbag should be used to hold money to tip the bellman; the zippered compartment on the inside of the front flap used to store your love letters; and the middle slotted pocket to hold your most essential accessory – lipstick.  Lastly, the lining of the handbag is burgundy, to represent the color of the uniforms at the convent where she grew up.  To me, CHANEL has transcended couture into a lifestyle that represents classic understated elegance.
