Continuing on with my Hidden Hong Kong series, I would like to take you on a journey through the open meat markets in Sham Shui Po. I recently got lost in this area of Kowloon (that’s another story) and found myself in the middle of the locals’ weekend grocery-shopping and all of its excitement at the crossroads of Pei Ho and Tai Nan streets. WARNING: If you happen to be a vegetarian or feel uneasy seeing the the sight of raw meat, please skip this post and come back tomorrow. I have to say, it was a little hard for me to take some of the pictures, myself AND I LIVE HERE, ha! But this IS life in China, this IS life in Hong Kong…so experience it, I did.

Getting lost in Sham Shui Po, I took a wrong turn and there I was in the middle of the chaos…starting with red meat.
Check out that knife! He was cutting up piles of meat so fast, I’m surprised I even got a shot of the blade!
Next stop…how about some duck?
Or maybe a chicken, or two, or three!
More red meat…
And then there was the fish…
I actually watched a lady point to the fish she wanted, and then the man threw the fish up on the table still flapping. It seemed to be in shock because it stopped moving for a bit before it was picked up, thrown into a plastic baggie (STILL ALIVE) and put on a scale! The next part was terrible as I watched them smack the fish to get it to stop moving in the baggie. This is when I quickly walked away and made a rush to the metro.
I think I prefer the fruit market much more!
